Notes on Analysis
The data is in the form of a spreadsheet with a row for each runner and columns for each distance where the time was measured. I only used the data from the mile columns.
There are holes in the data, most notable the women's race at mile 6. In this case I assumed a steady pace between miles 5 and 7.
Place is not in the data, only times. So place really is the count of the number of runners with a faster time (plus 1). So anybody with the same time, measured to the second, is considered in the same place.

In the following figures there is one line for every runner. The red line is the winner. The other highlighted lines are some New England runners (see key - Fig 5).
